The fluorescent lights hum with a low, irritating buzz that reminds everyone of the haptics from the early 20s. We’re sitting in a circle of molded plastic chairs made from recycled Pokémon cards, which were the Beanie Bunnies of Gen Z. A man named Gary stands up. He looks tired.

“Hi, I’m Gary, and I was a ‘Deep-State Reactivity’ addict during the Great AI Surge of the late 20s.”

“Hi, Gary,” the group drones.

“It started with one Reel,” Gary starts, his eyes darting to the holographic exit sign every other sentence.

“A guy in a truck shouting about a tax on breathable air. I knew it wasn’t true, but I commented anyway. I just wanted to correct him. I thought I was the thin line between truth and chaos.

By 2026, my brain was so fried by outrage, AI and Instagram (do you guys remember insta?) that I couldn’t look at a sunset without wondering which political party was responsible for the orange hue.

I lost my family because I told my daughter her preschool graduation was a ‘distraction from the deep state lies.’ I haven’t felt a natural dopamine hit since the 2028 election cycle when I voted for Mr.Beast .”

There is an audible groan of people who have all been there before.

“I remember the 2028 Mr.Beast Nation campaign,” Gary whipers

His eyes darting to the corner as if expecting a notification for FEASTABLES to pop up in mid-air by even mentioning the former President.

“We didn’t have debates. We had Subathons. I remember watching the ‘Cabinet Reveal’ livestream. I didn’t sleep as he ran a 50-hour ‘Last to Leave the Glass Box’ challenge.”

“I watched Ben Shapiro and AOC sit cross-legged in a transparent cube for two days straight while a motion-sensor confetti cannon blasted them every time they checked their phones.

It was simpler times…

Shapiro was reading the fine print of a trade deal out loud to stay awake, and AOC was livestreaming a ‘Get Ready With Me’ for defeating your enemy.

Gary sits down. A woman in the corner starts sobbing quietly. She was a “Mental Health TikTok” survivor who accidentally pathologized her own cat into a nervous breakdown. He has never been the same.

It’s funny. Until you realize Gary is just a slightly exaggerated version of your current Tuesday afternoon. Our algorithm is determining the direction of our lives.
(story written with the help of Gemini…who can’t understand subtlety to save its “life” yet).

We Need a Neural Intervention

Gary is a caricature, but the data is the crisis. In 2026, we are not just distracted. We are being chemically reconfigured. We have traded our sovereignty for a slot machine that lives in our pockets, and the house always wins.

To address the challenges we face, a comprehensive Neural Intervention is essential to regain control and implement lasting change.

Reality Check: If you are waiting for a digital detox to save you, you are bringing a water pistol to a wildfire. A detox is a vacation; a Neural Intervention is a rescue operation. We need to prioritize a Neural Intervention for our survival.

The Stats of the Surge

The AI slop era did not just flood our feeds with junk content. It rewired our hardware to value friction over family, over substance. Here is the bottom line based on the research.

  • The Predictability Loop: You are 2.5 times more likely to engage with content that confirms your existing beliefs. The algorithm knows this and feeds you conclusions instead of information. Read More: MIT
  • The Radicalization Rate: Internal documents show that 64 percent of people who joined extremist groups did so because the algorithm recommended them. Source: WSJ
  • The Mind-Shift Decline: In 1970, 25 percent of people reported changing their minds on a major political issue in the past year. By 2023, that number dropped to 8 percent. Source: NORC
  • The Caricature Effect: 85 percent of partisans significantly mischaracterize the positions of the other side. Only 15 percent can state an opposing view in a way the other side would recognize as accurate. Source: Science.org
  • The Partisan Filter: When regular Fox viewers were paid to watch CNN for four weeks, they shifted their perceptions on key issues by 11 points. Source: Berkeley

The Neural Intervention Fast Framework

To get free, we need to cut the strings of our algorithm.

1. The Serenity Week (starve your feed)

The first stage of our Neural Intervention is a hard disconnect.
We are going silent to allow the neural pathways to cool down.

You are too full to be filled with good things

Don’t Watch The News for 3 weeks: Jump to News Reset

  • If it only takes 4 weeks to change your political leanings, why not take a break and FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU THINK?

Logging out is not enough because the icon itself triggers a dopamine response.
TRUST me, your hand will betray you…you will reach for your phone and open the app before you register you are doing it.

YOU AND I ARE JUNKIES. The first step is admitting we have a problem.

2. The Brokenness Connection

The digital masks we wear are often mirrors of the spiritual masks we use to hide our pain. We put on a mask to protect ourselves and to avoid one more disappointment. Over time, that mask stops feeling like protection and starts feeling like a prison.

If you find that your digital “performance” is just a cover for religious wounds or a rigid system that felt unsafe, you are not alone. Real healing begins when we stop covering the cracks and let light into them.

Internal ResourceWhen Church Fails Us: How Brokenness Becomes the Gateway to Belonging At some point, maybe you got the message that church wasn’t a place for your real story. That to belong, you had to behave. Real healing begins when we stop covering the cracks.”

3. Post Neural Intervention Reset

To stop being processed by the algorithm, you must break the current cycle of what the machine thinks you want. Your phone is a reflection of who you were at your most reactive moment. Here is how you force a Neural Intervention on your primary devices.

Reset Suggested Content

Instagram has a specific tool to clear your Explore and Reels algorithm.
This forces the system to start your interest profile from zero.

  1. Open Instagram and tap your Profile icon.
  2. Tap the Menu (three lines) in the top right.
  3. Below ‘What you see’, tap Content preferences.
  4. Tap Reset suggested content.
  5. Tap Next and follow the instructions on the screen. You’ll be given the option to review who you follow and your ads topics (if we show you ads on Instagram).
  6. Tap Reset suggested content. Note: Resetting your suggested content can’t be undone, but your suggestions will become more personalized again as you like, share, and interact on Instagram.

TRAIN your Algorithm: Hide A Suggested Post

This one is a super hack. As you flick through, the algorithm will suggest things it ‘thinks’ you want. This is a rabbit’s nest of danger potentially. Whenever you catch something you don’t like or want to se,e you can tell it to suggest less.

  1. Tap Options above the post in your Feed.
  2. Tap Not interested. From here, you can also:
    • Tap  Don’t suggest posts from [name] to stop seeing similar suggested posts in your Feed.
    • Tap  Don’t suggest posts with certain words to stop seeing suggested posts with certain words.
    • Tap  Snooze to pause all suggested posts in your Feed for 30 days.
    • Tap Manage content preferences to manage suggested content.
    • Tap  This post made me uncomfortable to indicate that this post made you uncomfortable.
  3. After a suggested post is hidden, your response will be reflected in future suggested posts on Instagram. Learn more about how Instagram determines which posts appear as suggested posts.

Reset Your Feed

TikTok allows you to wipe the historical engagement data that keeps you in a loop of high arousal content.

  1. From your settings
    • In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
    • Tap the Menu ☰ button at the top.
    • Tap Settings and privacy, then tap Content Preferences.
    • Tap Refresh your For You feed and follow the steps on the screen. Once you refresh the feed, it can’t be undone.
  2. From the For You feed (in select regions)
    • Go to the feed in the TikTok app, press and hold the post or tap the Share button.
    • Tap Why this video
    • Tap Adjust your For You.
    • Tap Refresh your For You feed and follow the steps on the screen.

Turning on the “Boring Button” to reclaim your sovereignty.

To perform a full Neural Intervention on Facebook, you have to dismantle the three ways the platform profiles you: your feed preferences, your advertising “interests,” and the data it follows when you aren’t even using the app.

News Feed “Reduce More” (The Boring Button)

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Click Settings & privacy, then click Content preferences.
  3. Click any of the following options to adjust your preferences:
    • Political content adjusts how much you see about things like governments, elections, and social topics.
    • Sensitive content to adjust how much you see about things like graphic or violent content.
    • Manage “Favorites” to select people and Pages that you want to prioritize. This means their posts will be shown higher in your Feed. Learn about Favorites.
    • Unfollow to unfollow a person, Page, or group. Learn about unfollowing.
    • Reconnect to follow a person, Page, or group that you unfollowed in the past. Learn about reconnecting.
    • Snooze to restart, st,op or add more time to your snoozes. Learn about snoozing.

Ad Interest Wipe

Facebook builds a psychological profile of you based on “interests” it assumes you have. These interests are often what drive the most polarizing content into your feed.

  • Action: Select Categories used to reach you. Turn off every toggle (Job title, Education, Relationship status).
  • Action: Select Interest Categories and remove everything. This starves the machine of the data it uses to “hook” you.
  • Direct Link: Manage Data Use to Show Ads
  • While you are there, purge
    • Audience-Based Advertising
    • Ads from ad Partners
    • Activity information from ad partners

Off-Facebook Activity (sneaky buggers)

Facebook tracks your behavior on other websites to determine your “vulnerabilities” for engagement.

  •  Tap Clear previous activity.
  • Tap Disconnect future activity. This effectively “blinds” the algorithm to your life outside the app.
  • Direct Link: Hide Your Activity

The YouTube logo, identified in the Neural Intervention as a primary driver of the '180-second hijack' and focus depletion.

History and Recommendation Purge

YouTube recommendations are powered by your watch history. You must delete this history and pause future tracking to stop the algorithm from suggesting videos that trigger your outrage pathways.

  1. The History Purge: LINK
    • Open the YouTube app
    • Profile (bottom right)
    • Settings (gear icon)
    •  Manage all history.
    • Tap Delete
    • Delete all time.
  2. The Kill Switch:
    • Same Link: Under YouTube History
    • Click Turn Off
  3. Reset Ads:
    • Right below that
    • Go to the My Ad Center link
    • Turn off Personalized Ads.
    • This prevents YouTube from categorizing you into political or behavioral “buckets.”

The News Reset: The Strategy

The Strategy: Logic Over Emotion (Text Over Video)

The most critical part of this Neural Intervention is shifting your consumption from video back to text. Video content, specifically short-form “news” clips, Reels, and TikToks, is processed in the amygdala. This triggers immediate emotional responses. Text requires the prefrontal cortex to decode language. This process naturally slows down your reaction and engages your logic.

Digital Discipleship: News apps are digital discipleship. If your feed only confirms your bias, you aren’t being informed; you’re being processed.

Use Ground News to see how different outlets use specific photos and words to manipulate your reaction to the same story.

  • The Rule of Three: Never consume a major headline without checking three sources: one from the Left, one from the Right, and one Neutral (like AP or Reuters).

The Discipline: Use the “Blindspot” tool. See how a single story is framed differently by the Left and Right. Compare the images they use. When you see the visual manipulation side-by-side, the emotional power of the headline disappears.

Google News: The Data Purge

Google News uses your search history to build a “Reactivity Profile.” You need to wipe this to stop the loop of suggestions that confirm your bias.

  • Direct Link: https://myactivity.google.com/product/news
  • Tap Delete, then Delete all time.
  • Go to Controls,
  • Turn Web & App Activity to Off.
  • This effectively “blinds” the machine to your political triggers.

Apple News: Resetting the Neural Identifier

Apple News uses a local identifier to track which “Visual Triggers” keep you on the app longest.

  • Open Settings on your device.
  • Scroll to News.
  • Toggle Reset Identifier to On.
  • Open the News app
    • Following
    • Clear
    • Clear History and Clear Recommendations.

Now What?

The Recovery Phase:
You have the technical tools to reset the machine and clear the predictability loop. You know how to stop the 180 second hijack and reclaim your prefrontal cortex. However, a neural intervention is more than just a list of settings. It is a commitment to a new way of being human in a digital world.

Tune In: “You Still Belong” Season 1

Coming late winter 2026, we are launching You Still Belong Season 1. This podcast is designed for those who have felt pushed to the margins by rigid religious systems or digital tribalism.

We will explore how brokenness is not a barrier to faith but is actually the gateway to belonging. Each episode features stories of people who took off the mask and found that they were already seen and already loved. I will throw a link here when it is up!

One response to “This is Your Neural Intervention”

  1. Michael Homula Avatar

Nathan, this is incisive, prophetic, and deeply needed. What you’re naming isn’t just a technological problem, it’s a discipleship problem. Scripture has always warned us that what captures our attention will eventually shape our loves and loyalties. “Be careful how you live… making the best use of the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15–16). The algorithm disciples by habit and repetition; the Word of God disciples by truth and renewal.

Paul tells us plainly, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). That renewal doesn’t happen accidentally. It requires intentional withdrawal from what stirs outrage and intentional immersion in what forms wisdom. Your call for a true “neural intervention” echoes the biblical pattern of fasting—not just from food, but from anything that clouds our vision of God (Psalm 46:10).

I can personally testify to this. I took a four-year break from social media, and it fundamentally rewired how I think, consume media, and engage the world. That reset was Holy Spirit driven, and it changed me forever. Scripture and time with God now shape my attention, and when I do engage online, it’s with one aim: making much of Jesus. “Set your minds on things above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:2).

This isn’t about detox, it’s about devotion. Your piece names the crisis honestly and offers a path that leads back to clarity, freedom, and faithful presence. Thank you for calling us to reclaim our minds for the glory of God.
